HATTIESBURG, Miss. —Only four days after the EF-4 tornado swept through Hattiesburg doing considerable damage to portions of the Southern Miss. campus, classes will resume.
On Wednesday USM Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Joe Paul said over 500 students came back to campus early to participate in a campus cleanup. He said the rest of the students would have to be back on Thursday when classes start back up.
The quick turnaround for USM hasn’t been an easy one and Dr. Paul noted things will indeed be a little different.
“There will be some classes that have changed locations because we have some buildings up at the front of campus that aren’t ready.”
He pointed out the building where the music department is housed as having extensive damage and it’s been a scramble to find areas suitable to reconvene those classes.
“It’s just going to take more time.”
One piece of good news is that all the dorms on campus weren’t damaged.
“All the residence halls are intact and there were actually some students in the dorms during the storm,” he said.
Dr. Paul even said the power never actually went out at those residence halls.
Many students weren’t on campus at the time of the tornado because Mardi Gras break was going on during that time.
