Hattiesburg Buses Damaged in Tornado, Other Schools Lend a Hand

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Thanks to schools from across the state, the wheels on the bus will soon go around again at the Hattiesburg Public School District. Twenty-five of their 27 buses were damaged Sunday by the tornado that hit Forest and Lamar Counties so they have been unable to transport students to school. Superintended of Hattiesburg Public School District, James Bacchus says those buses are being repaired.

“Pressure from the tornado blew out glass on the buses, most of them were just glass damaged, so we figure in a week or two we will be back online,” said Bacchus.

He says in the meantime many schools have reached out to the district to provide transportation.

“We’ve had great support from Forest, Marion, Perry, Jefferson Davis, Green, we received two from Lamar County, one from Laurel, and one from Pearl in Rankin County. We’re pleased of the surround support and other school districts continue to call.”

“Right now we are up to at least 22 or 23 buses.”

The school hopes to open back up Thursday.
