JACKSON, Miss.—American Airlines and U.S. Airways Group has announced today that they will merge.
Both of the airlines serve passengers in the state’s largest airport.
“We think it’s a good thing and maybe an opportunity for Jackson,” said Jackson Dirk Vanderleest of the Jackson Municipal Airport Authority.
Currently those two airlines, Southwest, Delta, and United all fly out of the state’s capital. Vanderleest said it’s so early in the process that he really doesn’t have a lot of specifics as to how it could affect different routes.
“As to the expense and when, we don’t know now,” he said. “It will take several months.”
The $11 billion merger will now have to pass government regulators before it can start the official process of coming together. It will then be the largest airline in the world.
