Mississippi Holds as Most Religious State

JACKSON, Miss.--You're still the buckle of the Bible Belt and there are numbers to back it up. Mississippi is the most religious state in the U.S., according to a Gallup poll. The state was well above average with 58 percent of people saying they are very religious in 2012. The results of the poll were released this week.

Forty percent of Americans classify themselves as very religious, according to the poll, while 31 percent say religion does not play a part in their lives.

The poll included more than 1,000 interviews in each state, with a total of more than 348,000 interviews during the year in the United States.

Mississippi's neighbors ranked right up there, too. Arkansas, Alabama, Tennessee and Louisiana were all in the top ten, with Utah coming in second.

The least religious state in Vermont, with 19 percent saying they are very religious.
