The More You Molpus-John Stewart Apologizes to Frmr. Sec. of State

JACKSON, Miss.--Comedian John Stewart made national headlines with his apology this week to former Miss. Sec. of State Dick Molpus.

"The apology concerns a former Miss. Secretary of State who presided over a 1995 attempt to ratify the 13th Amendment that failed due to a bureaucratic snafu," said Stewart.

The skit, titled "The More You Molpus", painted the Democrat as a stereotypical bigot, who filed the ratification into the shredder. Stewart, after replaying the bit, acknowledged that Molpus had a positive record on Civil Rights and called him a "good man". The two have never met. Stewart acknowledged himself an elitist, although in a tongue-in-cheek manner.

He said the fact that Molpus was a human being with a real record, not just an "avatar", was brought to his attention about a half hour after the original broadcast.

"You may be thinking to yourself, couldn't you just look that up? Uh, yeah. We could, or we could have remained satisfied that we randomly slammed a dude because he had a name like Dick Molpus. We went with B, mainly because I am a 12-year-old boy, trapped in a 75-year-old man's body," he said sarcastically.

In the skit and the apology Stewart continued to make fun of Molpus' name, which he found amusing.

He didn't apologize, however, to the State of Mississippi.

"Maybe I'm apologizing to Mississippi for painting it as some kind of reluctant entrant to modern morality-uh no."

Molpus told WAPT in Jackson that he was hurt by the skit because he has fought all of his professional life and career for Civil Rights. He said he will write Stewart a letter thanking him for the apology.
