Vicksburg Campaign Discussed by Historical Society

VICKSBURG, Miss. – The battle of Vicksburg was over 150 years ago, Friday the Mississippi Historical society hosted their annual meeting focusing on the campaign.

“We started Thursday, night it lasted all day today (Friday) at the Vicksburg Convention Center,” said Mary Carol Miller, President of the Mississippi Historical Society.

She said anyone is welcome to join meetings of the society. Today they had several speakers at their meet up; they spoke on points of the battle that everyone may not be familiar with.

A few of the topics the lectures touched on included: the Brown Water Navy on the Mississippi River, the relationship between General Grant and General Sherman, and civilian life in Vicksburg while the city was under siege (apparently they had to hide out and live in caves).

“It makes people realize how we became the state we are today, its not always an upbeat history but its always fascinating.”

The gathering continues Saturday and lasts till noon. They will have an award ceremony for outstanding Civil War historians and authors. The annual meet up next year will take place in Jackson and focus on Mississippi’s museums.
