PASCAGOULA, Miss.--A punch to the face in the Jackson County Jail landed 46-year-old Anthony Eugene Moore in the hospital this weekend. Today he is dead. Officials at Singing River Hospital told media he died shortly after 5 Monday evening.
Moore walked by just as 19-year-old armed robbery suspect Dionte Jones was ending a negative phone call with a family member, said Sheriff Mike Byrd in a press release.
"Jones was on the phone arguing with a family member," said Byrd. "Moore walked by Jones as he ended the phone call. Jones then hit Moore in the jaw. Moore went down immediately, rendered unconscious."
He was taken to the hospital about 5 Sunday evening. Jones, who was also in jail on drug charges, was put in isolation.
Jones was expected to be charged Tuesday. The Miss. Bureau of Investigation has taken over the case, assisted by Jackson County authorities.
Moore is the second Jackson County inmate to die this year. Two weeks ago 40-year-old John Lee died after being rushed to the hospital. Family members claim he was an epileptic who did not get the proper treatment.
