JACKSON, Miss.—Mississippi youth all around the state will be headed into the woods this weekend for the youth turkey hunt.
It’s the time of the year where the next generation gets to try their luck before the rest of the hunting world takes to the land.
The 2013 dates are March 8 through March 14 for kids age 15 and younger.
If a hunter is between 12-16 years old they must have a completed certificate from a hunter safety course in the state, if they wish to hunt alone. No such certificate is required if they are in the presence of a 21-year-old hunter or old that has their hunting license.
The Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks states that every child under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
Unlike their older counterparts, the youth may harvest any gobbler no matter the beard length or age.
The rest of the turkey hunting world will get their start next Friday on March 15th.
