White Smoke, New Pope

JACKSON, Miss. – White smoke means new pope. Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio was chosen to head the Catholic Church Wednesday afternoon noon and will take the name of Pope Francis the first.

“We always say the Holy Spirit choses the pope and I think we hit the jackpot. I think he is very prayerful and very devoted to the poor. I think that is why he chose the name Francis because of Francis of Assisi and his connection with the poor and living in poverty. I’m told he lives in one room, doesn’t have a big house or anything,” said Marry Woodward with the Catholic Diocese of Jackson.

Bergoglio presented himself to the world Wednesday afternoon after he was elected on the Cardinal's fifth attempt at a vote. He's the first non-European pope since 1267. He was born in Argentina and had been the Archbishop of Buenos Aires.
