JACKSON, Miss.—Strong storms rumbled through the northern half of the state just after lunch on Monday.
“We’ve had reports of trees down and power lines down across a large portion of north Mississippi,” said National Weather Service Meteorologist Benjamin Schott.
Twitter has had damage pictures being sent out regularly over the last couple of hours.
“Some of the hardest hit areas were Yalobusha County and Lee County near Tupelo,” he said. “We’ve had reports of multiple semis tipped over.”
Schott said no tornadoes were responsible for the damage today in his opinion.
“It looks like some of the winds with those storms were anywhere from 70-80 miles per hour,” he stated. “With the environment that we have I don’t think any of this was done by tornadoes.”
Some of the damage on Twitter has shown small structures destroyed and roofs that were blown off by the straight-line winds associated with the storms.
No tornadoes are expected today as the storms move out of Mississippi.
