TISHOMINGO COUNTY, Miss.—After a lengthy investigation in the northeast corner of the state, the Board of Supervisors from Tishomingo County received just over $92,500 in misappropriated money on Monday.
“This was a culmination of a case of misappropriated funds where former Chancery Clerk Hayden Ables overpaid himself over a number of years,” said State Auditor Stacey Pickering.
According to Pickering the former clerk was paying himself for services that were never performed.
“This case serves as another example in which the State Auditor’s Office has worked to expose the misuse of taxpayers’ money, and I hope the check returned today will aid in rebuilding the county’s future,” said Pickering.
The amount that Ables misappropriated was extremely costly to the taxpayers according to Pickering.
“It was over $100,000.”
He said the investigation cost taxpayers $14,000 alone which went back to the State Auditor’s office.
