TUPELO, Miss.- The city of Tupelo is looking to save some money, and they plan to do so through energy efficiency.
WLBT reports they should start saving around $140,000 or more in the next two decades by upgrading to a more efficient lighting system for athletic fields, parks, and government buildings.
The Northeast Mississippi Daily journal reports that the city will replace the current system for about $5.3 million. 27 athletic fields and more than 20 city buildings will change their lighting inside and outside to longer lasting LED fixtures.
The city says that if they spend the money now they could save a minimum of $2.8 million in utilities over the next 20 years.
The project has been under consideration for years in order to improve lighting at sports fields. Other facilities were added to the conversation in an attempt to be efficient.
