Daily Digital Feb. 11: Hate Crime Sentencing, Healthcare, Possible Tax Cuts, and Space Exploration

For the Daily Digital, I’m Courtney Carter and today is February 11th.

Beating and running over a man and killing him. That hate crime against James Craig Anderson three years ago, and Tuesday three of the men responsible were given their federal sentences. Dylan Butler, John Aaron Rice and Daryl Dedmon were given maximum sentences; Butler got 7 years, John Aaron Rice got got 18 years and six months, while Dedmon had 50 years added to the two life sentences he’s currently serving. Video of the family’s statements can be found at newsms.fm.

Healthcare and insurance costs. They’re through the roof. Many families are turning to Obamacare to see how those costs could be cut for them. The deadline to apply for Obamacare is coming up on February15th and the Department of Health says 8 out of 10 Mississippians qualify for some type of health with insurance costs. In fact, a family of four can earn up to 94,000 a year and still qualify. News Mississippi spoke with the Director and Marketplace CEO. We’ve got what he says about the time it takes to apply at newsms.fm.

Speaking of help with money, a tax cut could help keep a little money in your wallet. Lt. Governor Tate Reeves proposed the “Taxpayer Pay Raise Act.” It’s a tax cut to the tune of $400 million dollars. It’s not immediate though, it would take about 10 years to implement and would create more tax exemptions for the self-employed, as well as remove the franchise tax on a business’s property. It would create a little extra money for you too..;. about $150 a year if you pay taxes.

And moving money around in DC for NASA. Representative Steven Palazzo proposed that bill that would not only increase their funding, but make it law for NASA to be required to show plans for future exploration. The bill also recognizes Stennis Space Center in Mississippi as a primary research facility for NASA. The bill still has to clear the Senate floor.

If you plan to serenade your significant other for Valentine’s Day but your guitar has seen some wear and tear, we’ve got the tips to clean it up on Newsms.fm.
