CLARKSDALE, Miss. — Get a college degree from Mississippi and move to another state; it is a trend some lawmakers hope to put an end to. “We are losing these type of bright young minds to other states,” said Representative Chuck Espy. Espy says he plans on introducing legislation this year that would give new college graduates a tax incentive to remain working in the state, possibly not requiring them to pay income tax for up to five years.
“It is very difficult for Mississippi to compete with places like Dallas Texas, the attraction, the social life and we are having a very difficult time keeping these type of young adults. By giving this type of tax break, imagine the turnover in money that would be spent by having these young adults not only stay in Mississippi, but they are likely to get married, start a family, build a home, and continue to spend their hard earned money inside the state of Mississippi.
Espy is a Democrat from Clarksdale who represents District 26 which includes parts of Coahoma and Quitman Counties.
