Doctor Arrested in Murder-For-Hire Scheme Unfit for Trial

GREENWOOD, Miss.  – The Greenwood doctor, accused of hiring hit men to kill the lawyer that represented his wife in their divorce proceedings years ago, will be committed to a mental institution.

Judge Breland Hilburn ruled Wednesday that Dr. Arnold Smith, 72, is unfit to stand trial in the murder-for-hire scheme and ordered him committed to the Mississippi State Hospital at Whitfield.  The ruling likely ends the criminal prosecution against Smith.  He had been charged with capital murder and conspiracy to commit murder.  Attorney Lee Abraham was not hurt, but an alleged hit man was killed in a shootout with police at Abraham’s law office.
