How to Donate, Volunteer for Disaster Relief

JACKSON Miss. — You may want to send a crate of supplies to disaster areas in Mississippi, but that may not be the quickest way to help out according to the American Red Cross.

While the Red Cross will take supplies, they say money donations are recommended so they can buy supplies near disaster areas instead of having to use the time and money to transport the goods there.

To make a donation:

Call 1-800-REDCROSS (733-2767).

Click on redcross.org to donate online.

Or on your cell phone, text “redcross” to 90999 to make a one-time $10 donation to American Red Cross disaster relief and the charge will show up on your next phone bill.

If you are looking to volunteer with disaster relief, Red Cross is asking you to do that through United Way.

You can find your local United Way branch here: http://apps.unitedway.org/myuw/luindex.cfm?id=browsecities&zip=00000&abbr=MS&app=
