Escaped Inmate Believed to Be in Stolen Vehicle

PERRY COUNTY, Miss. – An inmate escaped from the Perry County Jail around 2 a.m. Tuesday morning and remains on the run.

Perry County Sheriff Dale Smith says Jason Mazingo, 37, was able to get free by opening his cell door with plastic eating utensils.

Mazingo, who has ties to Brooklyn, Mississippi; Eufala, Alabama and Columbus, Georgia, was first believed to be traveling in a stolen 1985 brown or maroon Toyota pickup, with an antique tag.  Police said later Tuesday that Mazingo had ditched the truck and stole a 2003 White GMC Envoy from the Paul B Johnson State Park.
Mazingo was in jail for seven counts of residential burglary in Perry County and is not considered dangerous.  But Smith says anyone who comes into contact with him should use caution and call police immediately.
