ESPY Awards: Caitlyn Jenner References Mississippi in Speech, Ole Miss Wins Award

LOS ANGELES, Ca.- The Ole Miss Rebels took home some hardware Wednesday night at the annual ESPY awards, which are put on every year by ESPN to recognize the superlatives of the world of sports. The Rebels were the recipient of the “Best Upset of 2014” award for their thrilling 23-17 win over the Alabama Crimson Tide.

At the time, the Rebels were ranked 11th as the number-three-ranked Crimson Tide came to Oxford, underestimating Hugh Freeze’s squad. Former Rebels Bo Wallace and Senquez Golson were there in Los Angeles to accept the award. They were chosen by fans over the likes of the Kansas City Royals and the Georgia State men’s basketball team.

Caitlyn Jenner, formerly known as olympic athlete Bruce Jenner, was the recipient of the Arthur Ashe Courage Award. Jenner is a transgender who identifies as a woman, and spoke about the problems facing transgender teenagers in today’s society.

Jenner specifically mentioned the case of Mercedes Williamson, a 17-year-old black transgender, whose body was found in a field last month in George County stabbed to death.

“If you want to call me names, make jokes and doubt my intentions, go ahead because the reality is I can take it,” Jenner said. “But for thousands of kids out there coming to terms with the reality of who they are they shouldn’t have to take it.”
