First Pediatric Flu Death of 2015-2016 Prompts School Shut Down

GREENVILLE, MISS– The Mississippi Department of Health confirms the first pediatric death from the flu for the 2015-2016 season.

A thirteen year-old Washington School student has died from complications of the flu.

Prompted by the contagious nature of the flu, the school closed early Friday and will remain closed until Wednesday,

Five other students at the school have been hospitalized or treated for the flu.

The Mississippi Department of Health says that while the season has been a modest one, it isn’t too late to get your flu shot, and if you do get sick, don’t overdo it.”

“It’s very important to stay home when you’re sick so you don’t infect others,” says State Epidemiologist Dr. Thomas Dobbs, “Also be sure to practice good hygiene such as covering your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze, and washing your hands frequently.”

If you think you may have the flu, don’t try to ride it out. Head to your doctor for medication that could cut the severity of the sickness.
