Fly on a dime, where to travel during the off-season

JACKSON, Miss. – The idea of “cheap international travel” use to be an oxymoron. That’s no longer the case according Mississippi travel agent, Beth Stapelton. The owner of Get Out The Map Travel Company, Stapelton said, there’s an airline out of Iceland that is offering such tremendous deals, that it’s causing other commercial airlines to take notice.

“With [WOW air] you can fly from DC, for $200, over to Iceland, and then use that, as kind of a stepping stone into Europe,” said Stapelton.

Currently, WOW air does not not fly out of Mississippi. However, in the U.S., the low price airliner has terminals in Boston, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Las Angeles, Washington D.C., New York and Miami.

If you’re willing to fly or drive to one of these cities, you can get an unbelievable deal on overseas travel. As of Tuesday, WOW air was offering round trip service from Miami to Paris for $298. That same trip if taken by American Airlines would cost at least $550, given certain departure dates and times.

If you’re looking to stay closer to home, Stapelton said you can find just as much joy, by traveling in-state and heading towards Tishomingo State Park. For $75 per night you can enjoy a four person cabin with wood fire place, heater and A/C, screened in porch, fire pit and grill.

Stapelton says, most of the state parks across Mississippi offer modern amenities. “You don’t have to tent camp, you don’t have to have a camper. A lot of them [state parks] have WiFi access in the main part of the camp,” said Stapleton.

For those with deeper pockets, Stapelton recommends traveling to the Canadian Rockies. ” When you get into the spring and summer, in Canada. The Rocky Mountaineer train company becomes popular.”

Rocky Mountaineer is known for offering luxurious multiple day train rides, traveling through what is considered to be some of the most beautiful and inaccessible parts of Canada.

For June 2017, Rocky Mountaineer packages range from $2,359.20 to $6,719.20.
