Get ready to run for office

You’ve probably been part of a conversation in which you or someone else was complaining about the way the town was being governed.

“This mayor doesn’t care.”

“The city council is clueless.”

“What is the alderman up to these days?”

There are options. You can continue to talk, or you could take Ghandi’s advice and “be the change you wish to see in the world.”

Believe it or not, you CAN run for office.

If you’ve been toying with the idea of kickstarting your local government career, the deadlines are approaching soon, according to the Mississippi Republican Party.

March 3 is the deadline for individuals to qualify as a candidate for municipal office. May 2 is primary election day, and June 6 is the general election.

The Mississippi GOP is hosting seminars across the state to help candidates prepare for running their campaign.

“The Mississippi Republican Party is working hard to help protect and obtain seats throughout the state,” said Jennifer Duggan, spokeswoman for the Mississippi GOP. “We are continuing to host regional municipal meetings to promote and raise awareness of the importance of municipal elections.”

Many times, the voting booths will be set up, the campaign signs will be out, but the local community has no clue as to what is happening.

“What a lot of people don’t realize is how important local elections are,” said Mississippi GOP head Joe Nosef Jr. “The closer you are with your constituents, the bigger impact you can have on their daily lives.”

The GOP is also hosting seminars around the state on the process of running, the candidate’s rights, and getting their name out into the public. For more information on those meetings, click here.

News Mississippi has reached out to the democratic party and is awaiting a response.
