Getting Ready to Head for the Voting Booth: Candidates Working For Your Vote

LAMAR COUNTY, MISS– Candidates for state elected offices had five minutes to win your vote at a political rally at Lake Serene in Oak Grove Thursday night.

Sam Britton (R) and Tom Blanton (D) are both running for Southern District Public Service Commissioner. During the rally, they both addressed the issues with the Kemper County Coal plant and its costs being passed down to Mississippi Power customers.

“The cost of your utility bill matters,” says Britton, “a small rate increase may be small to some, but big to others.”

When Blanton took to the podium, he says that moves by Mississippi power were criminal.

“Folks, they took my money,” says Blanton, “my mom taught me that when someone takes my money and gives me nothing in return, that’s stealing.”

State Insurance Commissioner candidate John Moseley, whose family owns Clinton Body Shop, also spoke at the rally, and he says he’s not a politician, he’s just for the people.

“I’m easy to get along with and I don’t want to fight,” says Moseley, “but I’m pro-consumer, and there are issues that need to be dealt with.”

State Treasurer Lynn Fitch was not met by her competitor, David McRae at the rally, but she says that her work with the state just isn’t done yet.

“That’s where we need to drive,” says Fitch, “toward a positive Mississippi. I ask God for your prayers, your support, and your vote on August 4th.”

But the evening really heated up with Mary Hawkins-Butler, longtime mayor of Madison, and candidate for State Auditor, which is currently held by Stacey Pickering.

“He’s bought a recreational vehicle and personal cars,” says Hawkins-Butler about Pickering, “my question is, are you paying taxes on it, sir? You better practice what you preach. If you’re going to enforce the law you better obey the law.”
