Guilty Pleas Entered in Tax Fraud Case

JACKSON, Miss. – Two Meridian residents have pleaded guilty to stealing and using the identities of inmates to file false federal income tax returns.

Joyce Knight and Daniel Kelly made their pleas in federal court in Jackson this week and will be sentenced September 24.  Prosecutors said Kelly  stole the names, social security numbers and dates of birth of inmates at two Mississippi prisons while he was locked up at each of them between 2009 and 2011.  He would give the information to Knight, who then filed 27 bogus tax returns, which got them $16,000 from the IRS.

Both now face up to five years in prison.
