Hinds County Deputy arrested on drug charges

HINDS COUNTY, Miss.- Former Hinds County Deputy Douglas J. Nelson was charged with the possession of a controlled substance and conspiracy to possess a controlled substance, according to Sheriff Victor Mason.

 The deputy worked in the warrants division of the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office and was arrested while on duty in Byram. He was fired effective immediately.

Nelson has been accused of possessing 30 dose units of Oxycodone. He could face five years in prison for conspiracy and 20 years for the possession charge. He would also be required to pay a total of $500,000 in fines.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, Hinds County Sheriff’s Office, and Attorney General’s office were all involved in the arrest.
