UPDATE: Kansas City police officer dead after being shot

KANSAS CITY, KAN.– Sources are now reporting that the officer in question has died after a shooting that occurred earlier today

Update: The officer has been identified as Capt. Robert Melton.

KANSAS CITY, KAN.– An officer has been shot in the street and is in critical condition, according to local media reports. 

Update 3:30 p.m.-

Local news media reported that it was a police captain that was shot on Tuesday while responding to an armed disturbance. The incident took place at Second Street and Edgerton Drive around 1:30 p.m.

When the captain arrived one suspect was taken into custody immediately. When an attempt was made to detain another shots were fired and the officer was hit.

The captain was taken to the hospital and is in critical condition.

There are varying reports on how many people are in custody. News Mississippi will update more once there is confirmation.

This is not the first officer shooting for Kansas City. On May 9, Detective Brad Lancaster was shot and killed.
