Keeping Moms From Spreading AIDS Virus to Their Babies

JACKSON, Miss.  You may know her for being the doctor that cured a Mississippi baby of the HIV AIDS Virus.  But Dr. Hanna Gay is on a slightly different mission now.

“What we would like to do now in Mississippi, have no more babies that need to be cured,” she said.

And at Wednesday’s Breakfast Program for Innovate Mississippi’s 14th Annual Conference on Technology Innovation, Gay told participants, the technology and medicine is already in place to make it happen.  “We have the ability to prevent transmission from mother to infant in almost every case.”  But that success rate is greatest, she said, if all expecting mothers get prenatal care, and are tested – and treated if need be- for HIV/Aids.

The conference featured the latest technologies and innovations from Mississippi entrepreneurs and wrapped up Wednesday afternoon.
