Lightning Kicks Up: Know When to Head Inside

JACKSON, Miss– Central Mississippi was lit up with lightning Wednesday night, but the National Weather Service says that’s a good time to be indoors.

“This time of year, lightning can happen more often,” says Eric Carpenter with the National Weather Service.

Some might would say that the “lightning show” in Central Mississippi was beautiful, with the snaps of light flashing across the sky, but Carpenter warns that you should be indoors long before you see the lightning.

“If you’re close enough to hear thunder,” says Carpenter, “then you’re close enough to get struck, and you need to seek shelter.”

Storms with lightning could continue throughout the day as a cold front moves across the state.
