MERIDIAN, Miss.- A Meridian man has died after Lauderdale police restrained him during an arrest.

WTOK reported, 40-year-old Steven Gene Davenport got into a fight with another man in Meridian early Tuesday. Police said Davenport became violent when they tried to arrest him and that two deputies were injured when trying to break up the fight.

After Davenport was restrained, he became unresponsive. He was taken to a hospital where he died.

Davenport’s mother told WTOK her son used drugs and that she isn’t angry with police, but does want more information and answers.
