A new Mississippi Country Music Trail marker has been unveiled in honor of Camp Shelby.
Camp Shelby, located in Hattiesburg, began welcoming country music stars in the 1970s to perform for troops at the conclusion of annual training sessions. The new marker commemorates those memorable performances by the likes of Roy Acuff, Charlie Walker, Minnie Pearl, and others.

Camp Shelby hosted the 2025 Mississippi National Guard Retiree Day as well as the unveiling ceremony for the Mississippi Country Music Trail marker, which included a special performance by country musician and Mississippi native Marty Stuart.
The Mississippi Country Music Trail celebrates the state’s musical heritage by honoring the musicians, venues, and cultural landmarks that have shaped Mississippi’s influence on country music. Administered by Visit Mississippi, the statewide initiative features markers commemorating the roots of country music in Mississippi and invites visitors to experience its legacy firsthand.
