Mississippi Swimmer Dies During Alabama Storm

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — A Mississippi native and University of Alabama swimmer was killed Monday night when storms moved through the Tuscaloosa, Ala. area.

Authorities said John Servati, 21, died when a retaining wall came down on him in a basement where he had gone for shelter.  Friends said he gave his life trying to protect his girlfriend from the collapsing wall.

Servati graduated from Tupelo High School where he was a 10-time state swim champion.  At the University of Alabama, he majored in finance and was recently named to the SEC’s Winter Academic Honor Roll.
