A Mississippi teenager has drowned in Florida.

Officials with the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office say that 19-year-old Sara Sebren, of Pearl, was swimming with friends around 8 p.m. Wednesday night when she began struggling in the water.

A news release states that the group was nearly 250 feet from the shore of a public beach access point off of Santa Rosa Boulevard, and they were able to get her to shore with the help of a flotation device.

Firefighters were called to the scene and immediately began life-saving measures. EMS then transported the teen to Fort Walton Beach Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead.

Local officials told the Northwest Florida Daily News that red warning flags had been flying all day, indicating dangerous swimming conditions.
