A man wanted for his alleged involvement in a pair of shootings in Nebraska died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound during a police standoff in Mississippi, according to authorities.
Rankin County Sheriff’s Office investigator Tyler Brunell said that it received a request for assistance after U.S. Marshals attempted to serve an arrest warrant in the 1500 block of Shell Oil Road in Brandon on Friday at approximately 5:40 p.m. RCSO said the request came after the subject began firing shots at U.S. Marshals from inside the home.
The sheriff’s office dispatched armored vehicles to the scene as the suspect barricaded himself inside the home.
“After the armored vehicles arrived, negotiations commenced which were followed by more shots being fired at law enforcement officers from inside the residence,” Brunell said.
At approximately 8:45 p.m., law enforcement on the scene heard an additional, single shot fired from inside the residence and could not get any response from the subject inside. The decision was made to breach the residence, where the suspect was found suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Emergency medical personnel attempted to save the subject’s life, but he was later pronounced deceased on the scene.
The subject’s name has not been released publicly. However, KETV in Omaha, Neb., reported that the subject was 32-year-old Ricardo Kirk. Kirk was wanted in connection with a shooting that happened near 54th and Ames Streets Wednesday morning. He was also a person of interest in a homicide near North 35th and Davenport Streets that same morning.
Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey requested the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation respond to the scene to investigate.
