New Hope for Babies Born With HIV/AIDS Virus

JACKSON, Miss. — It’s being describe as nothing short of a medical miracle.  A new report in the New England Journal of Medicine says the Mississippi baby born with the HIV/AIDS virus three years ago is in remission and doing well.

“There is no sign of HIV,” said Dr. Hannah Gay who treated the baby at the University of Mississippi Medical Center when she was born.

Now she says it’s time to move to the next step.   “We are hoping to have more studies going; perhaps enrolling patients by the end of this year or early next year, that will follow up on this finding to see if we can replicate this finding in other babies that are born with high risk of HIV infection.”

As for the Mississippi baby, Gay continues to follow her and says the toddler has not taken any medicine for the AIDS virus in 18 months.
