- Keep dreaming about your big jackpot. A House bill was given a makeover in committee yesterday that keeps the possibility of a Mississippi state lottery alive. In the throes of yesterday looming deadline for bills to advance from committee (or die), HB 804 morphed from a proposal about the mental competence of criminal defendants to a bill allowing for lottery creation.
- A retail giant is poised to battle a sales giant of the internet. Walmart is targeting Amazon Prime subscription service for expedited delivery of online order. Walmart is lowering their fee on a similar delivery service, reducing shipping time to two days on two million popular items, including diapers and pet food.
- Single women in Mississippi are more than twice as likely to buy a home this year. The National Association of Realtors says single women now account for 17 percent of home buyers in the U.S. compared with just seven percent of single men who are opting for the proverbial white picket fence.
- Political party affiliation seems to influence Mississippi opinions on the legality of the President’s so-called travel ban. The executive order bars citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States for 90 days and suspends the admission of all REFUGEES for 120 days.
- Pescatarians…rejoice! Louisiana’s red snapper season opens today. But our state Department of Marine Resources gently reminds, if you catch a red snapper in Mississippi waters, you have to report it. Reporting is mandatory through a program called Tails ‘N’ Scales.
