Red Cross and UNICEF Taking Philippine Typhoon Donations

JACKSON, Miss.–The typhoon that hit the Philippines on Friday has left tens of thousands of people misplaced and needing aid.

Some estimates have the death toll around 10,000 people as of Monday even though the country has only confirmed around 950 deaths.

The Red Cross and UNICEF among others are taking monetary donations to help the region.

Mississippi Red Cross spokeswoman Samantha Kalahar says there are no plans to take food, water, or clothing up in the state.

“That’s because it’s not practical to gather those things and get them to the Philippines,” said Kalahar.

She encouraged people to visit www.redcross.org if they wish to make a donation to the affected region.

“That’s the best way people in Mississippi can help right now.”

Also UNICEF is accepting donations for the Phillipines at www.unicefusa.org/philippines.
