CANTON, Miss. –  William Wells has been identified as the Madison County courthouse shooter.

Police say, the 24-year-old Wells is a former firefighter and has been charged with the murder of 37-year-old Kendrick Brown.

Brown was shot early this morning on the court house steps after turning down a plea deal with the district attorneys office.

He was walking out with his attorney, when Wells drove up in a maroon Toyota Tundra, got out, walked up and shot Brown in the chest. Wells then sat his gun down on the ground as police approached him.

According to DA Michael Guest, Brown had three drug indictments and was facing jail time.
