State flag won’t fly over Biloxi…for now

The city council chambers were standing-room only Tuesday as protesters (both for and against keeping the state flag) sat in on the meeting and made their thoughts known.

Council members voted 6-1 to obtain Attorney General Jim Hood’s opinion on whether or not Biloxi Mayor Andrew Gillich’s decision to lower the state flags is within his power as mayor.

Mayor Gillich ordered all city buildings and properties to lower the state flag of Mississippi earlier this year. Gillich cited economic impact and tourism as factors in his decision.

News Mississippi has reached out to Atty. Gen Hood for comment.
