Taking Money From Planned Parenthood: Cochran-Sponsored Bill Would Get a Presidential Veto

WASHINGTON, D.C.–There were strong indications Friday that a bill that would take federal money away from Planned Parenthood would likely be vetoed by Pres. Obama. Mississippi’s senior senator, Thad Cochran (R) is co-sponsoring the bill in the Senate.

“A ryder that would, on a wholesale basis, defund Planned Parenthood, which is the proposal of some Republicans in the House, is certainly something that would draw a presidential veto,” said Josh Ernest, Pres. Obama’s spokesman, at a Friday press conference.

The legislation, sponsored by U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), would prohibit Planned Parenthood Federation of America or any of its affiliate organizations from receiving federal funding.  The bill, S.1881, is expected to be considered by the full Senate during the first week of August.
