Update: Oxford police officer officially charged with murder

Update:

After Oxford police officer Matthew Kinne had previously been arrested in connection with the death of 32-year-old Dominique Clayton, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has officially charged him with murder.

Clayton made his initial appearance in court this morning, but his bond hearing was postponed.

Original Report:

An officer with the Oxford Police Department has been arrested in connection with the murder of 32-year-old Dominique Lashelle Clayton, a mother of four, that occurred on Sunday.

During a press conference, Captain Johnny Poulos, the spokesman for the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, confirmed that officer Matthew Kinne had been arrested, but his charges were not announced.

Poulos stated that MBI special agents and OPD investigators “acquired information” which ultimately led to Kinne’s arrest after conducting interviews and collecting evidence.

Kinne, 38, has been with OPD for four years, and when it was determined that one of their officers may have been involved, the police department contacted the MBI to ensure that the investigation remained “unbiased” and independent”.

“We will not hide behind our badge,” Interim Police Chief Jeff McCutchen said. “This badge stands for truth and justice, and today is about justice for Dominique.”

McCutchen also stated that Kinne was “involved” with Clayton.

Authorities have not confirmed details related to Clayton’s death, but multiple reports indicate that she was shot in the back of the head at her Oxford home while she was sleeping and that her body was found by one of her children.

Poulos concluded the press conference by stating that the investigation is still in its early stages and that more information will be released at the proper time.
