Youngster Dead from Highly Contagious Disease; Others Treated

TUNICA COUNTY, Miss. — The Mississippi Department of Health has confirmed that the 7-year-old Tunica County elementary student diagnosed with bacterial meningitis has died.

The boy, whose name was not released, had been in intensive care at a Memphis hospital.  As a precaution, state health workers had been giving antibiotic treatments to about 80 other students who had been in close contact with the boy.  Thursday, the agency said the students no longer needed to take the meds because the type meningitis the infected student had was not contagious.
