3-year-old shot in Pike county; gun goes off while being cleaned

PIKE COUNTY, Miss.- Pike County deputies reported a 3-year-old is in the hospital after he was shot when a gun went off in a home. 

The toddler was at home with his mother and her boyfriend near Highway 98 East in McComb. The incident happened on Sunday around 3:15 p.m.

Detective Sgt. Robbie Roberts said that the boyfriend, Joseph Stalling, was cleaning a gun when it went off, shooting the child in the stomach. The toddler was standing close by.

The child was taken to Southwest Mississippi Medical Center in McComb and was transferred to Batson Children’s Hospital for surgery.

Roberts said this morning a call was placed to check on the health of the toddler and doctors said the child was awake and alert.

No charges have been filed and the case is under investigation.
