Adopt an Adult Furry Friend for Half the Cost at HSSM

GULFPORT, Miss.- Are you wanting to make your family bigger by adding a furry friend to the mix, but don’t have the time or patience to train a puppy or kitten? Well, now is the perfect chance to adopt an adult dog or cat.

The Humane Society of South Mississippi will reduce the adoption fees of adult dogs and cats from Aug. 23 through Aug. 30. HSSM is offering a discounted adoption fee of only $25 for adult cats and dogs.

“The reason why we’re doing adult dogs and cats in particular is, one they are our biggest population here at the shelter and they are also our hardest to place population.” Shellie Skiadus Community Engagement Manager at HSSM said, “Everybody wants a puppy, they’re super cute, everybody wants a kitten, they’re really cute, but it’s the adult dogs and adult cats that are much harder for us to place so we like to highlight them with an adoption special when we can.”

Many of the adult dogs and cats are already housetrained, know basic obedience and have experience in a home setting, making them the perfect pets almost immediately; no training required.

“We average about 300 or so animals a day at our shelter.” Skaidus said, “Last year in 2013, we cared for just under 11,000 animals.”

HSSM is open from Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. “We encourage you to bring your animals from home and the whole family to come in to help choose and interact with the new animals,” Skiadus said.

HSSM’s adoption fees include:

• Your new pet
• Spay/neuter surgery
• Up-to-date vaccinations
• Updated rabies vaccine
• Microchip
• Engraved ID tag
• Thirty days free pet health insurance
• Free vet visit within seven days of adoption
• Heartworm tests for all dogs over six months
• Starter bag of Hill’s Science Diet food
• 10% off in HSSM’s BowWow Meow Boutique on the day of adoption
