AG Wants Tamper Resistant Generic Pain Pill Packaging

JACKSON, Miss. — You may not find it as easy as it once was to get into your pain pill bottles.

Attorneys General from More than 40 states, including Mississippi are asking the Food and Drug Administration to force the makers of generic pain pills to use tamper resistant packaging.

“We aren’t immune from this problem of prescription drug abuse in Mississippi,” said Mississippi AG Jim Hood, in a written statement.  “I want us to be ahead of the curve in this battle.  Ensuring that these generic drugs are in tamper resistant packaging, like their branded counterparts, is just a commonsense improvement to help our state fight prescription drug abuse.”

But Good Neighbor Pharmacist Chris of Byram isn’t so sure that packaging is the best solution.  “I don’t know how it would cut down on abuse,” he said.  “A person can punch them out of a blister package as well as they can pour them out of a bottle,” he explained.
