Alcohol Involved in MSU Student Death, Driver Charged

STARKVILLE, Miss.–The driver of the vehicle at the time it crashed and killed a Mississippi State student has now been charged.

Starkville police reported a single-car accident killed 18-year-old freshman Kaleb Barker from Lucedale in the early morning hours Tuesday.

Apparently Barker was riding in the bed of a 2003 Chevy Silverado according to WAPT and it was driven by 18-year-old Sawyer Steede who is also from Lucedale.

Sawyer has now been charged with aggravated driving under the influence and was released from jail after bonding out on $50,000.

The accident occurred in a McDonalds on Highway 12 east in Starkville.

Barker ultimately died after being transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.
