AUDIO ON DEMAND: Drug Bust Leads to Shooting in Monroe County, Deputy Hurt, One Man Dead

MONROE COUNTY, MISS– Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell confirms a shooting has taken place between deputies and a man they believe was a drug dealer.

One officer was hurt, the man police had a warrant for is dead.

It all started with a traffic stop. Sheriff Cantrell says a man was pulled over for driving erratically.

“We found drugs in the car,” says Cantrell, “a good amount of Ice.”

The sheriff says the driver told the officers where he got the drugs. They obtained a warrant, and accompanied by SWAT, went to the home.

“We asked if he could come out and talk to us,” says Cantrell, “and he swung the door open and started firing.”

That’s when a deputy was hit, and the man was killed. Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is looking into it. No names of the deputy or the man killed at this point.

But where are these drugs coming from?

“We believe this could be the Mexican Cartel,” says Cantrell.
