Battle of Okolona Remembered at Old State Capital, 150 Years Ago

JACKSON, Miss. – Nearly 150 years ago today was the Civil War Battle of Okolona. Wednesday at the Old State Capital Beck H. Brandon, author of “The Battle of Okolona: Defending the Mississippi Prairie” lead the discussion on how Nathan Bedford Forest lead the Confederate Troops to Victory.

“Forest was defended that prairie against incredible odds. The prairie was very important to the supply of confederate armies. He was commanding Tennesseans who had never served under him before fighting with the odds against them to save an important part of North East Mississippi,” said Brandon.

There will be a reenactment of the Battle of Okolona in Okolona at 2:00 pm Feb. 22 for the battle’s 150 anniversary.
