Big Shake Up at City Hall: Meridian Mayor Keeps Cleaning House With Firings

MERIDIAN, Miss.–First it was the city’s long-time parks and rec man, then a long-time police captain. Now more firings at City Hall in Meridian under the new administration of Mayor Percy Bland.

Getting the ax this time were the city’s Chief Financial Officer and City Clerk Ed Skipper, who served during six administrations, and four civil service commissioners, who were given notice and will have a hearing next week.

He said the commissioners were all fired pending an investigation. He told TV station WTOK it had to do with the Open Meetings Act.

As far as Skipper, Bland said at a news conference that Skipper served at the will and pleasure of the mayor and that he has decided to go in a different direction.

Skipper cleaned out his office and met briefly with local media.

“I’ve given the bulk of my adult life to the City of Meridian and I hope I’ve done a good job,” he said. “We’ve had some great employees and I want to thank them.”

On the civil service commission the mayor’s most recent appointee, Fred Liddell, was not fired.
