BILOXI, Miss.- Within the next two months officials say they expect a new pier of Deer Island.
WAPT reports that the project began in the summer and Tidelands Funds is footing the bill. The pier will be 170-feet and cost about $360,000. Mississippi Secretary of Sate Delbert Hosemann informed media on Wednesday of the project.
Officials hope that the effort will open the island up to residents and visitors, also boosting the economy in the area. The island has hardly been touched for decades so the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources and the state are trying to keep it as close to natural as possible.
