Canton Alderman Arraigned on Bribery Charge

Louis Smith edit

JACKSON, Miss. — Canton Alderman Calvin Louis Smith has been arraigned on one count of accepting a bribe.

He appeared in federal court in Jackson this afternoon and was appointed an attorney.  Smith has been granted a $10,000 unsecured bond, which means he does not have to pay it unless he violates the condition of his release.  Smith was arrested by FBI agents and says he is not guilty of the charge against him.  He is scheduled to stand trial July 9.  If convicted, Smith could get up to 10 years in prison.
