MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The federal case involving a long running teacher test-taking scam that affected students in three states, including Mississippi, has ended with four defendants agreeing to stop teaching.
Federal prosecutors in West Tennessee said Tuesday that Corey Holmes of Metcalfe, Mississippi; Charles Ray Lee of Magee, Mississippi; Janett Dixon of Northport, Alabama; and Nia Kimble-Harris of Memphis, Tennessee are among 40 teachers who have accepted diversion agreements for their roles in a teacher certification test scheme led by Charles Mumford.
Mumford pleaded guilty last year to getting paid for arranging for substitutes to take, and pass, the Praxis certification exam on behalf of aspiring teachers in Mississippi, Arkansas and Tennessee. The scores were then used to help get jobs in public schools. Mumford was sentenced to seven years in prison and order to pay a $167,339 fine.
